Can you describe them? You might not care about tools, but it’s very helpful to learn to describe things you don’t know the names of. See if you can figure out which tool I’m talking about just by the description.
- This tool has a long, wooden handle with a metal head. It’s used for hitting things very hard. What is it?
- This tool has a plastic handle and a long metal shaft. Usually the tip is flat or a cross. It’s used to twist screws in and out. What is it?
- This tool has two plastic handles. It’s shaped like scissors, but it isn’t primarily used for cutting. It’s used for grabbing and pinching things. There is a tiny spring that pushes the two handles apart making it easier to open. What is it?
- Be careful with this tool: it’s dangerous! You could slice your finger with it! It has a plastic handle. There is a sharp blade that can slide in and out. It’s used to cut things. If the blade gets dull, you can break off the tip that’s dull and it will be sharp again. Eventually you have to replace the blade because it gets too short after breaking the tip off over and over again. What is it?
- This isn’t a tool. It’s a type of hardware. It’s long and pointy and made of metal. On the head, there is a slit or a cross so a tool can twist it. It’s used to hold things together. Around the shaft there is a thin thread that spirals from the tip to the head. You can twist it into something and it will stay there. What is it?
- This isn’t a tool either 😅 (I chose a bad title, didn’t I?). It is flat and round. It’s made of metal, too. There is a hole in the middle so you can put something through it. You use it to distribute the force of the hardware you use onto the surface of something. What is it?
- This one is a tool. It has a motor inside. It uses electricity. You can change the tip you use to do different things. The tips are called bits. You can use it to twist screws or put holes in things. It can do other things, too. To use it, you have to pull the trigger. What is it?
